Kilo’s new CLI is here!

A week ago, I was setting up the Kilo CLI on one of the laptops of a colleague and we saw something surprisingly happen: the new version of Kilo’s CLI was loaded (1.0.3 at that time, where 0.26.1 was the @latest tag).

So, I decided to set it up on my laptop and I immediately recognised that it was a fork from OpenCode which is one of the tools I really wanted to try out for the past few days but haven’t been able to find time to test it until now: It worked with the Kilo Gateway out of the box.

And it’s a wonderful experience. It’s so much faster than the old CLI and auto-corrects itself a lot better. The old CLI had some issues sometimes where it would just stop/hang where this one rarely has that issue, only with very slow providers. And when an LLM/Provider returns an error, this CLI seems to handle it a lot better (for example, wrong tool calls are handler properly).

With the new experience, I’m able to go a lot faster and I prefer it over Kilo’s extension which is based on Cline/Roo. The extension now only has those buggy moments where it’s slow/hangs and the CLI is always at top speed.

What’s also great is that I can use my other subscriptions with the Kilo CLI as well. In their 1.0.3 they didn’t have this yet and only supported Kilo Gateway, which would’ve been fine but this feels more like the Kilo spirit: Open access.

One thing I do miss are some credits to OpenCode. Their website doesn’t mention it once, which feels like a bummer. Also inside of the CLI a message that it’s based on OpenCode or a /credits command for other people their hard work would be welcome 😉

Outside of that: Great work from the Kilo Team! Congrats on launching Kilo CLI 1.0!
